Measures 6066m Par 72 off its championship plates (5841m Par 72 off the white plates) with five par 3s ranging from 135-186m, eight par 4s ranging from 296-382m and five par 5s ranging from 455-482m. Course was built in 1991 and ever since the course opened in the early-1990s the open resort-style layout with minimal trees and lots of bunkers and mounds has gained a reputation to be quite a challenging layout. There are wintergreen couch grass fairways and rough with large sized 30m long SR1020 creeping bent grass greens with some poa which gets sprayed off. In terms of hazards, there are up to 14 ponds/lakes across the entire layout. Every hole is bunkered with a total of 72 bunkers on the course now. Overall, the design of the fairway bunkers are for shorter hitters as bunkers being 180m off the championship tees do not come into play for the more skilled golfers. Also, I found many of the ponds/lakes not to be in general play as the wide fairways and generous rough did not punish many of my errant shots. Highlights include: the 186m 2nd (index 5) to a green slightly above the tee which is guarded by 2 bunkers; the 374m 11th (index 4) which doglegs 45 degrees left around 2 red-staked ponds hidden from the tee on the left with 2 fairway bunkers right off the tee to a green guarded by a bunker short right; the 362m 12th (index 10) which doglegs 45 degrees right around 2 fairway bunkers right off the tee to a green guarded by 2 bunkers left; the 163m 13th (index 12) with a teeshot over a red-staked pond to the double green (shared with 17) with 2 bunkers right and the water along the left; and the 382m straight 16th (index 6) which is gently downhill and the fairway bends left around a large and deep bunker left 200-230m off the tee to a green with 3 bunkers and the large storage dam along the right. McCracken is the third-most bunkered and third longest (behind only Links Lady Bay & Fleurieu) of the 7 layouts on the Fleurieu Peninsula (others being Fleurieu, Links Lady Bay, South Lakes, Victor Harbor, Willunga & Wirrina Cove). The heavily bunkered, open and relatively devoid of trees layout is reminiscent of Fleurieu and Links Lady Bay layouts. The back nine has the more challenging holes with pick being 11,12,13 & 16. The 1st & 10th play very similar to each other which is gently downhill to the green from the elevated tee near the clubhouse. In fact, the par 5s (at 1, 4, 8, 10 & 18) are of similar length and strategy and are not very challenging to par. The par 3s (at 2, 5, 7, 13 & 17) are well bunkered with large greens with ridges and undulations running across them. My pick would be at 2, 13 & 17). The course uses stormwater run-off from the residential properties which is captured in its many storage ponds/lakes and also has a water license from the Hindmarsh River to irrigate the course. The course has a predominant SE winds whereas in winter the prevailing winds tend to be from the NW to W. Course access is from McCracken Drive about 85km south from the Adelaide CBD and about 20 minutes to Goolwa. McCracken is one of SEVEN 18-hole grass green courses within the Fleurieu Peninsula area which has around 50000 people. Victor Harbor has around 13000 people and is located about 85km south of the Adelaide CBD. Played here on 2nd October 2012 off the championship plates with $30 weekday green fees and $40 weekend green fees. Good clubhouse and practice facilities here too. Of the 3 layouts along Encounter Bay (all of which are quite lush and have good course conditioning at the moment) my pick would be Victor Harbor which is more challenging and varied than this layout.

Course has improved since 2009 in my opinion, greens were in great condition, they are large and most have many undulations. Fairways also enjoying the rainfall. Enjoyable layout with a lot of the holes featuring water hazards. Well worth a hit.

Not very enjoyable due to DRY conditions. Perhaps unfair assessment due to current drought, Should play again when course improves with rain! Interesing layout spoiled by dry fairways etc.
