The Ashbourne Private Links is on private land and has been under one family for nearly 100 years. Established in the late 1920s as a 9-hole grass green course Ashbourne now measures 2422m Par 33 OUT (2396m Par 33 IN) with four par 3s ranging from 131-175m, four par 4s ranging from 294-400m and the short 435m Par 5 7th/16th. Course has natural rye and common couch grass fairways which are quite lush. The 9 seaside bent grass greens are mostly 15m long and have some poa in them which can make the greens play a little slow. The teebeds consist of mostly rye grass with only 2 alternate tee mounds when playing 18 holes. The alternate tee mounds for the front and back nine are not far apart and does not change the par of the hole. There are no bunkers on the course. 1st&10th- 385m is a straight hole played slightly downhill to a green visible from the tee mound with 30m tall pine trees along the entire leftside of the fairway. 2nd&11th -298m is another straight hole but played slightly uphill to a green visible from the tee mound. 3rd-131m / 12th-145m is a shortish hole from a slightly elevated tee above the 15m long 2-tier front-sloping green. 4th-400m / 13th-360m is a blind teeshot over a crest about 200m off the tee to a left-sloping fairway. 5th&14th-294m is another straight hole that is played gently uphill with a fairway which bends slightly to the right. 6th&15th-160m is another par 3 from a slightly elevated tee mound above the green with a pine tree and its branches about 20m short left and right guarding the frontside of the green. 7th&16th -435m is the only Par 5 on the course with another blind teeshot over a crest 200m off the tee which bends to the left to a green not visible from the tee mound. Fairly easy and short Par 5. 8th&17th -144m is the first of 2 closing par 3s which play gently uphill to the green. 9th&18th 175m is probably a unique par 3 with the green and flag not visible from the tee mound as the line of sight from the tee to the green is through the rightside treeline. The hole bends to the right, however, if hitting over trees is not within your abilities, then you can play through the middle of the fairway then hope you get up-an-down to save par. If you play the hole this way then it is 205m long, but still is a par 3 for the men but a par 4 for the ladiesprobably the most challenging par 3 on the course. Ashbourne is a well-maintained 9-hole layout interspersed with pine-tree lined fairways. Played here 3rd October 2012 with $10 green fees. Given its course location in the Adelaide Hills the course can become quite chilly in the cooler months. Ashbourne is a small village of around 350 people approximately 140-160m above sea level. Course access is from Signal Flat Road (dirt road) which is about 500m from the corner of Ashbourne Road West/Signal Flat Road intersection. Continue along Ashbourne Road West for another 1km (past the primary school) to reach the main intersection in the village. The clubhouse can be reached on (08) 8536 6220 but this is almost never attended as the course is run by its owners. Overall, better course conditioning here than the 9-holer at Strathalbyn.

A great course, that appears easier than it is. There is good coverage on fairways and greens. You certainly need to be on your game and thinking about where your going to put your first shot. Bracken fern can take up hours of your time and a poorly hit drive can lead quickly to a high score.
