If its been a while since you played Thaxted then you're in for a surprise. Over the past few years the course has undergone a great many improvements. The fairways have been resown, new greens, the rough has been thinned out and new practice areas.

Time for an update since it has been nearly 10 years since the previous reviewopened in 1964 Thaxted Park now measures 5952m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 106-170m, ten par 4s ranging from 267-402m and four par 5s ranging from 462-512m. Course has a mixture of Santa Ana couch / wintergrass rye / kikuyu grass fairways. The fairways are a little patchy with numerous clumps of clover grass weeds interspersed across the layout. The rough is cut fairly short and consists of a mixture of Santa Ana couch / wintergrass rye / kikuyu grass. The teebeds consist mostly of Santa Ana couch grass. The 10-20m long bent grass greens (mix of SR 1019 and SR 1020) also have some poa in them and are relatively smooth but not very quick. In terms of hazards, there are 8 bunkerless holes with a total of 25 bunkers on the course. Christie Creek runs through the back nine holes and there are 4 storage dams on the course with a few of them coming into general play on some back nine holes. Highlights include: the opening 462m slight bend left 1st (index 14) which is played gently uphill with 3 fairway bunkers on the right about 20-50m short of the 20m long green which is guarded by another 2 bunkers; the 170m 11th (index 5) with an elevated green about 10m above the tee with 3 bunkers; the 512m straight 14th (index 7) which is played gently downhill from an elevated tee with 2 red-staked ponds along the left and the OOB caravan park on the right to a bunkerless green; the 106m 15th (index 17) to a green nestled below the tee and in between 2 red-staked ponds left and right with a rear bunker; the 380m slight bend left 16th (index 3) with the red-staked Christie Creek hazard in the right rough to a well-guarded green with 3 bunkers; and the finishing 394m 18th (index 1) which doglegs 45 degrees left from 200m off the tee with a fairway bunker on the right through the dogleg about 220m off the tee ,and the red-staked Christie Creek which, cuts across the fairway 240-260m off the tee to another well-guarded green with 3 bunkers. The layout is interesting with 10 holes being played in an east-west orientation and 8 holes being played in a north-south direction. The course has a tree-lined parkland style layout with a few gentle doglegs with most greens not being visible from the tee mound. Apart from the 170m 11th, the par 3s (at 6, 8 & 15) are not well bunkered and are the course's easiest holes. The par 5s (at 1, 7, 10 & 14) progressively get longer as you warm into your round with the front nine par 5s being particularly well bunkered holes. The back nine has the pick of the holes on the course with Christie Creek becoming a factor and more pressure on your positioning off the tee with some pronounced doglegs. Course access is from Golf Course Drive (off Panalatinga Road). Course elevation is approximately 120-160m above sea level with the highest point on the course 2nd green and the lowest point along the 18th fairway. Played here 16th October 2012 with $30 weekday green fees and $35 weekend green fees. Check out the for course history. Not a bad public access course with a challenging back nine

Thaxted is a great course in the foot hills. It has 18 holes that are all very challenging. The fairways are predominately santa anna couch with bent greens. The course is fully watered with some of the best greens around that are always fast and tricky. With full bar and kitchen facilites, as well as a pro shop Thaxted really is a great place to play golf.
