Penfield Golf Club
9 Holes
PAR 72
5636 M

The Course is a challenging 9 hole layout with excellent greens. The teeing areas have 18 sets of Blue (Championship) markers, 9 sets of White (Social) markers and Red (Ladies) markers at preferred locations.

Fairways are lined with native trees, feature bunkers and subtle dog-legs to promote a fair test of golf. Several greens and teeing areas are raised to add interest to the terrain, which is predominantly flat. The practice area includes a 200m fairway, a putting green and a bunker. Members are required to supply their own practice golf balls.

Penfield measures 2816m Par 36 with two par 3s ranging from 134-161m, five par 4s ranging from 254-361m and two par 5s both 493m. Course access is somewhat confusing as the Penfield Avenue roadway which splits the course is closed between Commercial Road and Woomera Avenue. Course entry is from Woomera Avenue in the northern suburb of Edinburgh and the clubhouse is actually a bar which, from the outside, looks like a container shed. However, do not let the looks fool you to believe the course is a push-over. The medium sized pine and gum tree-lined fairways have some quite lush kikuyu grass fairways and teebeds. The medium-sized bent grass greens have consistent decent speed too. And there are an astonishing 29 bunkers on this 9-hole layout with the 361m slight dogleg left 5th being the only bunkerless hole on the course. To play 18 you are simply playing from the same tee mound as the front nine, so there is no change to the style of the hole. The layout is flat with the first 3 holes on the eastern side the closed Penfield Avenue roadway, then you cross the road to play holes 4-6, then cross back over to play holes 7-9. Highlights include: the 286m sweeping dogleg right 2nd with the busy round-a-bout intersection at Commercial Road/Purling Avenue OOB on the left with 3 fairway bunkers 20-70m short left of the green guarded by a bunker short right; the 134m 4th with a teeshot over gum trees to a green guarded by 4 bunkers; the 161m 7th with 4 bunkers; the 342m straight 8th with 2 fairway bunkers off the tee to a 30m long gently front-sloping green with 2 bunkers; and the 493m straight 9th with 2 fairway bunkers off the tee with another 2 bunkers 80-140m short for your approach to avoid and another 5 bunkers guarding the green - impressive bunkering. The par 3s have large greens and are well bunkered as are the closing two holes. There is some variety here for a short course. I agree that the course offers a challenge to the beginner as well as the frequent golfers. Played here on 29/09/2011 with $15 green fees. I was most impressed with the bunkering on this 9-hole layout. Definately one of the better conditioned 9-holers in the Adelaide area.

As descibed above, a nine hole layout. Relatively flat, with variation around the greens to help make the challenge a bit greater. The course recently had grey water irrigation installed and you can tell. The whole course is far better off than it used to be. Softer, greener fairways mean hitting the fairway doesn't mean a 2nd shot off rock hard dirt any more. I was very impressed with the improved level of greens keeping after playing here last weekend. A great place for those who are still developing their game, and a reasonable challenge for those who have a lower handicap.
