Tropical North QLD
Cooktown Golf Club
9 Holes
PAR 65
4297 M

Cooktown County Golf Club is a nine hole course, with duel tees. Constructed on a natural sand belt, the course has been built in the tropical bushlands that boarders Walker Bay and the Anan River.

Located beside Monkhouse Point, with the imposing Mount Cook as a constant backdrop, the natural beauty of the surrounds make this links type course a must for golf adventurers and holiday hackers alike.

However, there is a catch to all the beauty. This is the most northern golf course on the East Coast, and the wind in the dry season funnels up from the south east and blows around 20 knots most days.

New irrigation systems augment the natural wet season sprinklers, and tee boxes, greens and fairways are well presented all year round. Free drop from Echidna holes.

My mates and I play at Cooktown most weekends and are constantly trying to find ways to master this tricky 9 hole par 65 course. With no par 5s it’s not a long course but the thick scrub lining the fairways and the stiff south-easterly winds that prevail all year round can really challenge your game. Just about all par 4s punish a wayward drive whether it’s a slice or hook and playing out of the coastal scrub can be treacherous. If you can survive the tricky holes like 3, 7 and 8 and cash in on the shorter par 3s you'll score well.  Look out for the tricky, blind par 3 6th though. At 206m this is a tough par to make but if you cut the tree line slightly you'll hopefully land near about the double tiered tabletop green. Other holes of note include the right bending dogleg par 4 4th with a daunting tee shot if you dare to take on the corner and the tough 7th/16th with an elevated tee and blind second shot with trouble surrounding the putting surface. Fairways are generally maintained well and greens are lightning quick which makes for a good round.  A couple more bunkers and better maintenance of the few existing bunkers would give the course a bit more character and could really turn this into a hidden gem. Overall tricky greens, narrow sloping fairways and 40 knot winds make for a challenging, picturesque round at the northern most course on the east coast of the continent.

If your are going to the far north, put Cooktown on your to do list. What an absolute gem of a country course. The course is not long as stated  but boy does it make up for it in other ways. High winds protect the course as do the tricky greens. If you can get close to handicapp here you are on a really good round. The greens are a bit bumpy(as you could expect for tiny club, but are well sloped and very tricky to read. Only a par 65 it is so underated. Great volunteer course these days friendly club with a huge amount of potential. overall playing here was more fun then anywhere i played in the North. Play off 12 and have never broke 80 there.

If you can master this course then you can tame any course in the land, not a long course by any standards, but the wind, sloping fairways & tricky pin locations will bring you to your knees very quickly. A true gem which will only get better once the expansion to 18 holes is confirmed.

My wife and I played the course in a 40 knot wind and thoroughly enjoyed it. The course is in amazingly good condition and the greens are very good. There are some tricky holes caused by the slope in some of the fairways. A very pretty course and very friendly staff who were willing to serve a beer and have a good chat.

Even though its only a nine hole course, it does have teeth especially if the winds up from the southeast. greens are fair and fast with the fairways offering a variety of lies on a sandy base, can be very hot in summer, wild boar diggings can be difficult to play out of (G.U.R) most fairways are fairly narrow and the coure is well spaced out. dont stray offline too far as the jungle is real hard to play out of.Plenty of land to expand . has potential.
