Nestled within the verdant hills of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, Maleny Golf Club’s quality, 12-hole course provides visitors with a picturesque, Scottish-inspired, ‘golf-as-it-began’ playing experience.

Originally opened in July 2015 as a nine-hole layout, the innovative design by golf architect Graham Papworth will eventually become 18 holes.

Maleny Golf Club takes full advantage of some excellent natural assets – gentle rolling hills, well-drained volcanic soil, existing kikuyu pastures, surrounding rainforest and some wetland.

From the elevated first tee, players are presented with a panoramic view of the links-style course and an ideal vantage point from which to assess the golfing challenge ahead.

However, players will encounter some stern tests of golf along the way, including a penal kikuyu rough for those who stray from the well-defined fairways.

Played this picturesque 9 hole course for the 1st time last week and was very pleasantly surprised. Very friendly staff who are very obviously proud of their course.

Relatively open and forgiving, due mainly I think to the lack of rain, I think the rough will be more challenging once they have some rain.

All in all a very enjoyable experience and I will certainly be back.

Greens were good and will be even better after some rain.

Maleny’s 9 hole links style golf course has been operating for just over a year now and is a great addition to the scenic Sunshine Coast hinterland. The course plays over bare rolling hills just north of town and the small shipping container clubhouse offers up great views of just about every fairway on the course.  The natural undulating terrain creates some good challenges around the greens with most inaccurate approaches leaving short sighted pitches and some well below the putting surface.  There is one water hazard to avoid on the par 4 2nd/11th and the rough bordering the left side of the 8th/17th is extremely thick and anything that ends up there will not come back. The toughest hole on the course is the 387m par 4 9th/18th which plays uphill with OOB left and a narrow green that is slightly blocked by numerous tall pine trees. The only real criticism of this course is that there is no alternate tees for the back nine. This is quite rare for a 9 hole course and a little disappointing for the $30 green fee. There are plans in place for the next three holes to be constructed so hopefully a full 18 hole course will be ready for play at some stage in the future.  The overall experience at Maleny is quite a positive one with a relaxing country style atmosphere, shapely greens and a unique layout to the rest of the Sunshine Coast.
