In its hay day, Tara Golf Club was an 18 hole par 72 oil green track measuring 6104m. However, due to major flooding in recent years and a downturn in golfer participation in the town, the club has hit tough times and the course has been reduced to a nine hole layout which measures 2840m and a par of 35. There are remnants of the old oil greens and overgrown fairways but sadly they'll probably never see golfing action again. Most fairways have doglegs and accuracy off the tee is a must on the middle holes especially. Undulla Creek winds itself through the course and is a real feature on holes 5, 6 and 7. The 345m par 4 5th requires and long right to left drive leaving a narrow approach over water toward the slightly elevated green. The 6th is double dogleg par 5 measuring 495m with a daunting tee shot toward the creek and plenty of trouble if you miss the fairway. Following that is the 372m par 4 7th which is another great test with a long accurate drive needed down the right side of the fairway leaving a mid iron to navigate over water and trees. These well designed holes are a real challenge and certainly are some of the more interesting holes you'll find on a bush course. With drought affecting much of rural Queensland, it is no surprise that there isn't a great deal of grass on the fairways and the natural dirt greens aren't the best to putt on and probably an indication how the hard times have hit this club. Cheap camping is available at Tara Lagoon on Showground Rd just walking distance to the golf course and is great opportunity for a relaxing hit in the bush on your travels through the Western Downs. The honesty box is located at the gate as you walk into the course and a round of golf is $5.
