After a 10 year absence, it was great to get back out to Stanthorpe and have a hit at the course that I learnt the game on. The course has undergone a few changes in the past few years including the removal of all the tall pine trees that lined the fairways leaving quite a sparse landscape in parts and the addition of an extra fairway and green. The layout is now 10 holes with the 6th and 15th playing separate from each other. The new hole is the 6th which is a double dogleg par 5 measuring 436m. Although most of the fairways are fairly forgiving, this one is tricky to navigate and only the best drive down the left half of the fairway will give you the best chance at attacking the green. From 200m in, the fairway narrows and then bends to the right and is surrounded by a thick array of gum trees. Other holes of note include the neat little par 3 3rd/12th with a couple of bunkers guarding an elevated green and the 407m par 4 4th with the old Southern Railway line running down the right of the fairway. Wide fairways and a flat up and back sort of layout should make for some low scoring and with well manicured greens, lush kikuyu fairways and large mobs of kangaroos lazing about, makes a round at Stanthorpe a must when visiting the Granite Belt. $20 for 18 holes.

I played the Stanthorpe Open last weekend and I was impressed. This course almost went under financially and has not had rain for over 8 months, yet the course presented well and the greens were immaculate (bent grass). I thought it would be a "bump & run" style of day, but after 2 holes, I had the confidence to fly it at the pin. The atmosphere in the clubhouse afterward was special. These people have been through a lot, but in these tough financial times, random people were shouting me a beer and they all had time for a chat. You don't get that much in the city. A great day and looking forward to returning next year!

A great little course set in the back of this wonderful town. Played on the way through on a trip to Tenterfield. ideallic settings and a wonderful atmosphere. An enjoyable game of golf is to be had at this course.

Especially late in the day when the residents, (Kangaroos) and there are loads of them, return home after a long day of grazing. One of my playing partners found them to be a hazard as he was approaching the final hole.

Oops. Adds an aspect to playing it would be hard to find elsewhere!!
