St George will straight away become the bench mark for sand scrape courses in my travels. I played my very first comp on sand with some trepidation. Totally unwarranted. The course was well grassed in the main, the holes challenging, the greens an interesting part of the round. A couple of long par threes and one hidden behind a tree! Friendly members goes without saying, and there were some pretty decent handicaps among them too. Well worth the experience. The Relic.

St George boasts a well maintained sand green course with plenty of bending fairways and a few lengthy holes to test most golfers. Most of the layout is irrigated and the fairways are arguably the best on the western side of the Darling Downs. Tee boxes are well grassed and the greens have a good cover of sand and hold approach shots well. The bending fairways generally favour right to left ball flight and often trees are positioned close to the tee which puts extra emphasis on accurate driving. The standout hole is probably the daunting 216m par 3 5th with the Balonne River looming on the left. Well positioned trees on the right make the green tough to hit and par here is a good result. St George is an interesting and challenging course and with peaceful bush surrounds and $10 green fees makes it a must play when travelling in south-west Queensland.
