Winton’s par 70 course features 10 sand greens, a flat terrain with sparse vegetation, a few hazards and measures just over 5400m. The layout has a few alternate tees and the 7th and 16th have separate greens to change things up on the back nine. The venue for the 2014 Women’s State Sand Green Championships, the course is one of the shortest in the Central West with a few par 4s under 300m including the 234m 8th with OOB bordering the left edge of the fairway. Other notable holes include the 420m par 4 1st (index 1) with a right dogleg, the 288m par 4 5th/14th with an elevated and irrigated grass tee box and the 139m par 3 16th with a small green sloping from front to back which is tucked nervously close to a dry hazard to the right and OOB over the back. Although the course is quite dry throughout, the locals have gone to great effort to irrigate a few tee boxes and a generous patch of fairway 130m from the final green. It mightn’t sound like much, but compared to other courses in this vast, hostile environment, it is a great achievement and much appreciated by locals and tourists alike. Their weekly competition is played on Sunday mornings and a round of golf at Australia’s dinosaur capital is $5.
