Quilpie’s par 70 sand green track is Queensland’s most inland golf course and is situated a few kilometres west of town off the Diamantina Developmental Road. The course is set amongst stony mulga scrub and features several water hazards, tight fairways lined by thick arid brush and two grassed tee boxes. The four par 3s are all guarded by water which is a great feature for this part of Queensland. The 18th is one of the shortest par 3s you’ll play measuring just 85m with water and OOB looming just metres from the putting surface. Other notable holes include the 340m par 4 1st with a sharp left dogleg, the 492m par 5 9th which has a 90 degree left dogleg and water crossing the fairway and the 286m par 4 13th with OOB right and the smallest and most elevated green on the course. Overall, the course is probably one of the more challenging and interesting layouts in the outback with tight bending fairways, soft oil greens, water in play and a well presented clubhouse with manicured lawns. Quilpie was the venue for the 2016 Queensland Men’s Sand Green Championships and is a great spot for a hit for travelers exploring the vast south-west region of the state.
