Muttaburra is the longest 9 hole course in the Central West measuring over 6100m.  This sand scrape track sits on the Longreach road 4 kilometres from town and there are no alternate tees so you repeat the same nine to make the full round of 18 holes. The firm and rocky fairways are pretty generous but numerous dry creek beds and the odd water hazard can punish inaccuracy. The notable feature here are the sizeable oil greens which are easily the biggest in the district with some offering up some lengthy putts with uphill, downhill and sideways movement.  They should be the envy of most outback courses with consistent speed that is similar to putting on grass. The biggest green is the 4th with a length of 23m and a couple of water hazards make this arguably the most scenic par 3 in the region. The strongest sloping green is the 315m par 4 9th with a severe slope from back to front and anything long of this green will result in a tough up and down from well below the flag. Longer hitters will try and take on this dogleg final hole with a water course at the 200m mark and a great reward if you can clear the trees leaving yourself a short pitch and a birdie opportunity. Other notable holes include the 386m par 4 3rd with a left dogleg around Cochran’s Corner and trouble if you miss the fairway, the 500m par 5 6th with thick gidgee scrub lining the fairway and the 210m par 3 7th where par is a great effort.  Muttaburra Golf Club is the most geographically central course in the state and is a good option for an easy nine for tourists following Queensland’s dinosaur trail.

The secret to scoring well on this course is length off the tee, with a good short game. There is a number of water hazards that challenge the golfer to cut some length off the hole, but don't miss hit it or you pay the penalty. There is a good variation in each hole with wide fairways and the "take a par and run" 7th par 3 at 221 metres with a tiny green.

At $2 it's well worth a hit if you are out Longreach way.
