Obviously struggling for water but even if it was fully grassed it is a pretty boring course. 17 is a good little par 4. Drivebale for the long hitters with the green tucked to the left behind some trees it is a proper risk and reward tee shot. The elevated green on the par 5 13th provides a bit of interest and the two tiered green on the 9th rewards an accurate approach or good touch on the green. I was happy to support the club with a green fee and it is great to see golf being played in these little country towns.

Located on the southern outskirts of the city, Mount Isa Golf Club is set amongst the rugged natural landscape of this region with rocky outcrops, dry creek beds and an abundance of native trees. Fairways are rough in parts and rely heavily on irrigation to keep them playable through the drier months. The greens are in reasonable condition and some with interesting shape like the 1st green that’s just 10m deep and the 9th with a narrow double tiered surface that’s only 5m wide through the middle. Measuring just 5827m, the course does have a few reachable par 5s and only two par 4s are over 365m.  The real challenge here is avoiding the many OOB areas looming around the course. Because the layout is quite narrow, over half of the holes have OOB and thick scrub on one side of the fairway and sometimes close to greens which emphasises accuracy from tee to green. Some interesting holes include the 152m par 3 8th with a large gum to avoid and thick scrub around the putting surface, the 439m par 5 13th with the only elevated green on the course the 395m par 4 15th (index 1) with a left bending fairway and OOB in play if you stray too much on your approach. With an interesting layout set in peaceful bush surrounds and the only grass greens for 770km, a round at Mount Isa is a must when visiting this iconic mining city. $25 for 18 holes.

This is a good layout, but the greens were very rough. We played here twice, 3 days apart and the pins hadn't been moved or the greens cut, and they were long, bumpy and slow the first time we played. The fairways were in reasonable condition and with preferred lies through the green there were no issues with any less grassed areas. The course has no bunkers, but a number of holes have large trees in the middle of the fairway. There are some nasty internal out of bounds, particularly between the 13th and 16th holes. What looks like a hazard from the tee on the right side of 13 is actually marked as OOB, with the same occurring on your second shot on the right of 16. It is an easy walk but take plenty of water as there are no drinking fountains on the course. The green fees of $25 are a little high for what you get, but given the weather out here they do well to have grass on the fairways and greens. Certainly worth a game if you are in the area and, given there are no other alternatives nearby make sure you check it out.

Mount Isa Golf Club is an amazing golfing experience. It has nice Green fairways, that are well defined by a first cut of rough and hard red dirt. It offers breath taking views as the green grounds of the course is surrounded by Grand Canyon like mountains.

Although you wont run into the traditional types of hazards such as Sand Bunkers and Water Traps it offers its own hazards in the way of GUM Trees lining the fairways and some pretty rugged country off the fairways.

After you've slogged it out in the heat for a couple of hours you can relax inside at the Club house and cool off with an ice chilled beer and have a friendly chat with some of the locals who all seem very kind and passionate about the game we all love.

All in all a must do golfing experience.
