Hughenden’s par 70 course has hosted both the Men’s and Women’s Queensland Sand Green Championships in recent years and the well maintained grass tee boxes on every hole is its major attribute. The first tee is the standout with a 20m long box which is lined by neat irrigated gardens. With a mostly hot and dry climate in the state’s vast north-west this important aspect can’t be disregarded. The course itself has mostly wide fairways, minimal hazards and only four par 4s over 350m.  Some notable holes include the 282m par 4 4th named “Amen Corner” with a left dogleg around a dry hazard area and another in front of the green and the neat 322m par 4 13th with a few trees to clear off the tee. Interestingly there are two lengthy par 3s with the 5th measuring 196m and the 16th which is probably one of the longest par 3s out there stands at a whopping 228m! These testing holes mixed with a few straight up and down par 4s makes for an interesting round at one of the better sand scrape courses you’ll play. The club sits on the banks of the Flinders River and a round at Hughenden should be considered for the many travelers that follow Queensland’s Dinosaur Trail. $5 for 18 holes.

Just came back from playing in the 2011 Hughenden open. Was a great weekend the clubhouse and the people were fantastic. Our game fees included two lunches breakfast and a dinner, and the sprerad was great. The course has sand greens and having never played on them before I felt thet they we easy to read but speed was an issue with lots of my puts pulling up short. The fairways are long and a little rough with the rules of a club length releif on the course. There are some hard holes placed among the towering gum trees and the out of bounds fence lines. These include and elevated 228m par three over a small water hazard. Which I found to be a very hard hole. All in all a great course layout which would look spectacular with more water to encourage more grass cover. I enjoyed the two eighteen hole rounds even though i struggled on the first day of the comp. So if you are travelling through the west and would like a round I would recommend the Hughenden golf club for a hit. For a country course with volunter workers they do a great job in keeping such a large course in good condition considering the lack of water available. Wednesday afternoon is there social round and comps on the weekend.
