Emerald Golf Club is the only 18 hole course on the Central Highlands
and is conveniently located right in town close to shops and accommodation. The
par 70 course plays beside the Nogoa River and can be prone to the odd flood.
Highlights on the front include the 3rd and 4th which
both play over water with bending fairways to navigate and the par 5 6th
which plays beside the river. This par 5 measures over 500m and has a demanding
narrow tee shot toward a dogleg with water right and another hazard just beyond
a driving distance. Depending on your drive, your second can be a short punch towards
the corner or you can take on the trees with an iron and leave yourself a short
pitch into this elevated green. Notable holes on the back include the par 5 13th
with severe slope off the fairway, the short par 3 15th with an
elevated tee shot and the long par 4 18th (index 1) with a tree to
avoid off the tee and a long second toward an elevated green surrounded by a
variety of palm trees. The course is in great nick for a rural track with
superb greens and lush surrounds but only has two bunkers which are both beside
the 17th green. Emerald is the last grass green course heading west
until you hit Mt Isa and is well worth a round when visiting the Central
I am a local member of this course and therefore have had a lot of rounds on this course and still to this day it remains challenging.
The course has suffered with the drought but some rain in the past few months has definitely helped the course and the new rule of no carts on the fairways will give them a chance to come back to their former glory soon.
The front nine is flat with water surrounding 3,4 and 6th holes.
The back nine is more hilly and longer in terms of the holes played and boasts the hardest hole on the course the 18th which on monthly medal day plays some 415 metres uphill par 4 for men and par 5 for women and is a beautifully crafted LONG hole.
I grew up playing at Emerald as a Junior. The water on hole 3 was
daunting as a young tacker!!! Good memories.
Have been playing here for the past 10 years. In this time have
seen the course go from a goat track to a very nice course. Very
challanging course with water holes on the front.
Have played here twice whilst on holidays!! The first day was not
under influence, the second in the hot dry northern sun. Not a
Water holes make for interesting golf on the front nine!!!
A Good course with nicely looked after greens. Try it out!
