Although short in length, Alpha’s 18 hole sand scrape track is one of the more interesting courses in the region. Tall gum trees are dotted down the middle of most fairways and every par 3 has trees guarding the putting surface. There is a reasonable covering of grass on the fairways and often it offers up a preferred lie rather than the usual tee up through green you’ll find on just about every course out this way. Grass tee boxes on every hole are well maintained and only a few need a bit of attention. Holes of note on the front include the 459m par 5 1st with two towering gums to navigate and OOB down the left; the left dogleg 283m par 4 3rd with an OOB horse paddock to carry off the tee and the 168m par 3 8th with four tall trees surrounding the green. The back nine features the 142m par 3 13th with the most elevated and sloped green and the 14th which is the shortest par 4 at just 249m with OOB looming down the left of the fairway. Longer hitters will look to dominate the six par 4s under 300m but there is always risk verse reward with lingering trees punishing even a well hit ball.  These short par 4s and two reachable par 5s should give up a birdie opportunity but there is no straight forward tee shot out there and it certainly keeps it interesting throughout the 18 holes. Alpha Golf Club was the venue for the Queensland Sand Green Championships for men in 2012 and again for the women’s tournament in 2015 and the interesting layout, good course maintenance along with a relaxing clubhouse serving cold beer and meals makes this course one of the best in the Central West.
