Darwin & Top End
Palmerston Golf & Country Club
18 Holes
PAR 70
5689 M

Palmerston offers a public 18-hole championship course, clubhouse and a lawn bowls club. Set in tropical surrounds, the golf course is a challenging and rewarding par-71, enjoyable for players of all standards including professionals as the host venue for the NT PGA Championship in 2016 and 2017.

Palmerston offers two contrasting nine holes, the front nine is stronger with challenging greens and water coming into play on six of the nine holes. The back nine is well wooded and demands accuracy off the tee and on the approach.

As other reviewers have said the two nines are completely different. The front 9 is pretty good with the 3rd, 4th, 8th and 9th being very good holes. But the back 9 is last chance council course central. Play the front 9 twice if you can and you've got a decent game of golf. The first tee is about a kilometre from the proshop and I got lost trying to find it. The map on the scorecard is not representative of where to go at all. Must be top end humour.

Played the front 9. Quite dry compared with Darwin GC. Greens were in pretty good nick. Couple of big par 5s on the front. Course has the potential to be a premium course with some improvements. Some of the bunkers need rakes.

Nice course for a weekend hit however the heat is something that take some getting used to. The people were nice and the club has a great Territory atmosphere. I enjoyed my afternoon on this course and i look forward to a few more.

Course has 2 distinct halves, as the front nine was built by a developer some time after the original 9 holes, now the back 9. The front 9 has a bit of a linksy feel to it, fairly open with undulations and some water hazards, and is the more interesting of the two halves. The back 9 is a more traditional parkland style with tall trees lining the fairways. It's not overly long, par and rating 71 for men, 72 for women. Condition of the course was only fair, fairways are a bit scruffy and the greens, while reasonably fast, had a few bumps and lumps, causing some unexpected rolls and hops on the putts. While the course itself is a fairly easy walk, the front 9 is about 500 metres from the pro-shop, so you have a very long walk to the first tee, then the same long walk back again when going from the 9th green to the 10th tee.

This course is now 18 holes stretching through a new housing estate "Fairway Waters".

The cheap green fees ($15 / 18 Holes) was an attractive drawcard that regretably did not extend to the condition of the course. Fairways, although well grassed were not cut to good standard. No bunkers had rakes and greens either had plastic conduit flag sticks without flags, or no flag stick at all. The course has good potential with well treed fairways and strategically positioned waterways.

Overall a disappointing experience.

This course has recently been finished, Feb 2004. The front nine has a completely different and chellenging format to the back nine layout. It has already hosted the NT Open in its first year.

Unfortunatly the couse suffers a lot from vandalism, Flag poles and rakes are continually been stolen or thrown into the lakes.

Golf is available at all times of the week, however club day are women-tuesdays & combined on-Sundays until 2pm.

Green fee are $20.00/rd, Electric carts are also available for hire at approx $25.00/rd, The club house offers Poxies, snacks and drinks until 10pm most nights.
