COURSE DETAILS

Narrandera Golf course is built on rolling sand hills, the fairways are lined with pine trees in some places almost to thick to walk through. We are rated inside the top 10 country courses in NSW and the number one course in the Riverina ,this is an excellent test of golf on a course with a great reputation for being in top condition all year long. Motorised Carts available. Competition days are Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday.

Played (horribly) in the Sat comp. 6/6/15. The many trees shouldn't be an issue because the fairways are generous, but they can be. Grass coverage was sparse with preferred lie available and necessary. Greens seemed furry (winter?) with a few bare patches. They were soft and held well, but many plug marks from prior groups (and days) weren't repaired. This is a bit sad. Two of the Par threes required a driver for this hacker and a few of the fours were long as well. A fair walk for this old fella, with raised greens , elevated tees and sloping fairways. Friendly clubhouse and only $20 for the day. Almost in town is a bonus. The Relic.

Measures 5752m Par 70 with five par 3s ranging from 113-198, ten par 4s ranging from 283-387m and three par 5s ranging from 480-519m. Layout is typical of a country course, most holes lie in a up-and-down north-south direction. There are 3 exceptions: the 113m 2nd heads in a southwesterly direction, 165m 5th heads in a westerly direction and the short 283m 15th heads in an easterly direction. Most holes have wide fairways with greens which play very slow. Holes worthy of note (or challenge) is the 198m par 3 18th with a slightly elevated tee overlooking the green with a bunker short and 2 bunkers left of the green. Some easy short par 4s less than 330m (4th, 6th and 15th). The three par 5s (480m 3rd, 487m 8th and the 519m 12th) are quite simple with no real challenge as there are limited bunkers and wide fairways to punish the errant shot. Played here 29 July 2010 and only paid $25 social green fees. Friendly club, but it is a shame they haven't got enough water to maintain the 18-hole course. The course is very dry and each winter the rains pass around the town. I suggested turning the course into a great 9-hole course, as there are other 18 hole courses in the area (Leeton and Griffith), however Narrandera has traditionally been 18 holes. Needs a lot of work to remain a challenge.

The big dry has certainly had its impact on this course. However, not so much that you can't enjoy the challenges it has to offer. If you haven't played here before it would be worth considering staying a couple of days to have more than one go at this course. I found that I was thinking of better ways to play a few of the holes AFTER I had teed off and walked up the fairway to find subtle problems with hitting down the middle etc. I am sure a second visit would allow for tactical improvements. The greens were in fantastic condition while the fairways are in the process of recovering after recent rain. Preferred lies on fairways and there was always a reasonable lie within a club length - and oon many occasions the lies were perfect anyway.

It’s with haste that I type this review in defence of the Narrandera Golf Course. Unfairly slated by Cotto this course offers challenges very few city golfers can handle. With the naturally undulating fairways and the thick forest immersing you as you play every shot. This is a thinkers golf course. You are punished off the tee if you are a fraction wayward.

You have to target your landing area and be brave. If you enjoy your golf and are after a good, tough but fair challenge this is for you.

Enjoy.

I’ve played this course twice and it must be haunted because no body is ever on it, this course offers challenges to both expert golfers and the beginner bring your A-game becuase a B simply won’t pass, hills and thick high red gums are you main problem as well as the odd leaf on the green or the odd thousand, so if your looking for a peaceful game on a great course jump on board the Narrandera train.
