Kapooka Golf Club is still 100% operational. There is a dedicated committee of both Military and Non-Military golfers who are ensuring this beautiful course survives. The Greenskeeper has done a wonderful job and the course is coming to life with spring now upon us. Access is easier than ever and with Non-military membership starting at $220 per year, is the cheapest golfing option in the local area. $10 for a casual round of golf and you are assured of not having to hustle and bustle to get your round in due to a backlog of players. Get out and see the Riverina's best kept secret. Check out the website at kapookagolfclub.net

Measures 5510m Par 71 with five par 3s ranging from 125-187m, nine par 4s ranging from 245-365m and four par 5s ranging from 478-502m. There is no general public access to Kapooka Golf Club without an escort from either military personnel or a club member from the checkpoint gate. I was very grateful a member met me at the checkpoint to escort me to the course as this is the only way for the public to access the course. Course has mostly kikuyu fairways with a mix of smallish couch/bent grass greens which were recently cored. There are no bunkers on the course but many kangaroos and pine tree-lined fairways with a few hills to play over and across and the natural creek which comes in play on the 1st, 8th, 9th & 16th holes. Highlights include: the 281m straight 1st (index 12) with a teeshot slightly downhill over a roadway with a natural creek across the fairway about 170m from the tee with a grassy bank 240m off the tee on the right to a flat bunkerless green; the 490m 2nd (index 1) with a blind teeshot over a crest which doglegs about 60 degrees right from 240m off the tee with pine trees on the dogleg corner to a green that plays gently uphill from the dogleg; the 187m slightly downhill 8th (index 6) with a small pond 1m over the back edge off the green and the 269m slight dogleg right 9th (index 14) with its narrow driving area with the same natural creek as the 1st on your left running about 200m from the tee parallel to the fairway with trees on the right to a large flat green. The back nine is rated more challenging than the front nine but I prefer the front nine's variety of holes. The par 5s are rated amongst the hardest holes on the course with the 502m straight 15th (index 3) followed by the 125m 16th (index 11) with a bern across the front of the green. The 18-hole layout winds itself around the Blamey Barracks at approximately 240-260m above sea level about 7km south-west of the Wagga Wagga CBD with access along either the Olympic Highway (from the S-bend curve) or the Sturt Highway (from Kapooka Road). The 18-hole layout has been open from 2000 and when I played here on 5th September 2011 with $10 green fees, I was told the course was mostly closed for renovations for the Defence Force Open to be held here in November. The club should really look into becoming the city's 3rd 18-hole public access golf course which could lead to more money generated for the course. But until this ever happens, you must call the club on (02) 6933 8426 to see if a member can meet you at the checkpoint to escort you to the course.

DOD has not closed this cse. As at 16 Mar 2010 we have increased our membership to double what we had this time last year. After 160mm of rain over the last 2 weeks, the cse is looking great. Comps are held Friday arvo (9 hole choock run), 9 & 18 hole comp Saturdays & an 18 hole comp on Sundays.

Located on an Army Base just outside of Wagga Wagga. It's 18 Hole's not 11.

The Greens need a little work.

No Sand Bunkers.

There is a nice mix of long Par 5's and Par 4's.

The 16th is good, a short par 3 with a creek running right in front of the Green.

A Fun and Cheap ($10) Day out

Worth a look if u want a change from the City and Country Club's.
