Muirfield Golf Club
18 Holes
PAR 69

Muirfield Golf Club has a reputation for being a very good members’ course but at the same time a very difficult driving course – a challenge to golfers of all skills levels. With most of the holes carved through the bushland it has been said that groups of 4 had to walk "single file", thus is the tightness of several tee shots down narrow tree lined fairways

Now after many years of constant change, Muirfield boasts some of the best greens in the metropolitan area and with the recent completion of 5 new holes and a complete irrigation system, the golfers of Muirfield and their guests will be happy for many years to come.

I noticed that there are no recent reviews for the course. It has had major work done to improve the fairways and, in particular, the topsoil. A program was set in motion a couple of years ago to use sand-link drainage on several of the fairways and this is ongoing. As these sand-filled drains are about 5cm wide and 30cm deep it is to be expected that this will help in the breakup of the clay base of the course. Smaller areas are being patched with the compacted clay being broken up to a depth of around 40cm and sandy loam being added before replanting of the grass. These measures are already showing signs of improvement in the playing surface. Muirfield is still one of the most testing par 69 courses around.

Time for an unbiased review from a non-member...and again remember this is NOT the forum it is the course review section...Muirfield measures 5618m Par 69 with five par 3s ranging from 147-201m, eleven par 4s ranging from 284-420m and two par 5s ranging from 470-485m. Course has an undulating layout with tree-lined kikuyu grass fairways. The mostly medium-sized mixture of poa/bentgrass greens are reasonably paced but are not fast by any stretch of the imagination throughout the year. The course will shortly all have Santa Ana couch grass teebeds. Every hole is bunkered with a total of 40 bunkers on the course. Just to clear up, not one of its fairways are so narrow that you must walk single file, but hitting iron of the shorter par 4s (at 3, 4, 14, 17 & 18) is advisable to score well on. I agree that the back nine is probably more challenging than the front nine. Highlights include: the 147m uphill 2nd (index 13) with 2 bunkers shortside; the 415m long par 4 5th (index 2) which doglegs right 45 degrees from 220m off the tee to a green with a bunker right; the 374m 7th (index 6) which doglegs right 60 degrees from 200m off the tee to a smallish green with 3 bunkers; the 154m gentle downhill 9th (index 7) to a 2-tier front-sloping 20m long green with 3 bunkers; the 420m straight and slightly uphill 12th (index 1) with a teeshot across the pond with a blind approach over a crest to one of the smallest greens on the course guarded by a bunker 15m short left; the signature 284m slight bend right 14th (index 10) with an elevated tee above the fairway which has red stakes on the right to a green with 4 shortside bunkers; and the 374m straight 16th (index 8) with the red-staked pond starting from 75m short left and runs along the leftside of the green with 2 bunkers short. Generally, the undulations, bunkering and a few blind shots over crests keeps your game interesting. The par 3s are quite varied with 3 out of the 5 teeing off in a northerly direction and are all reasonably challenging and well-bunkered. However, 5 out of the 11 par 4s are less than 330m in length with the finishing 2 holes being fairly weak, short and straight par 4s which is a disappointing way to finish the round. Course elevation ranges from approximately 80m above sea level at the lowest point along the 14th hole to 110m above sea level from the 17th green/18th tee. The course has homes which skirt the southern and eastern boundaries whilst Perry Street is the western boundary and Barclay Road is the northern boundary. Despite being far from its famous namesake in Scotland, Muirfield was established in 1953 to gradually become one of Sydney's north-western Hills District's better public access golf courses as nearby golf clubs such as Castle Hill, Oatlands and Pennant Hills are all private golf courses. There is also the luxury of having a spare 143m par 3 hole between the 5th and 13th which has 3 bunkers if any of the regulation holes need to be closed. There are 3 ponds near the clubhouse/carpark and another near the 14th tee which are all used as stormwater harvesting ponds to irrigate this rather undulating clay-based layout. Overall, wouldn't rate it as the best on Sydney's northern suburbs but it is reasonable golf course without being overly challenging with a modern-looking clubhouse. Played here again most recently on 27/7/2012 with $40 weekday fees and $46 weekend green fees. Ensure you bring cash to pay for green fees and ensure you book your weekend social rounds here. The proshop can be reached on (02) 9871 7940.

So we arrive in the pro shop to pay the green fees and the pro tells us they don't have eftpos...WTF??? I mean seriously guys, it's 2011, get your shit together! To make matters worse we went to the clubhouse to get cash from the ATM and when we returned the pro had let another group go in front of us? Thanks champ, way to make a social golfer feel welcome!

Nice course well maintained. Heaps of trees, many holes are long and straight forward. The course lacks some variation, but there are a few holes that really are good. Greens are good, fairways neat and tidy. The proshop is pretty bad however, with few big name brands and is understoked. overall 6/10

I've never had a bad day at Muirfield GC. The course is very well maintained and has a good number of challenging holes (esp. the back nine). Course availability and green fees are very reasonable. Last time I played it was in very good nick. I have found that it can get a bit congested with slow players on mondays and thursdays as there are usually a large number of foursomes plodding their way around but provided you're not in a massive rush, this isn't an issue. Not a big fan of the Gloria Jeans advertisement in the middle of the lake as it clearly lowers the tone significantly. Here's hoping Lowes doesn't have designs on sponsoring the second pond.

Four of us played last Sunday and enjoyed it very much Two of had played 15 years ago so in real terms we were all new to the course. Having read earlier posts regarding how dry the course was we were pleasantly surprised at the good condition we found through the green. The greens were quite quick and there are many testing holes (we are on handicaps 19, 25 & up) A pretty course with a clubhouse boasting great views across the course we all agreed we would like to come back and have another crack. Quite a hilly course so we were glad we booked carts Would recommend quite highly
