Played Macquarie Links for the first time yesterday and really enjoyed the layout because it makes you think and you don't just reach for the driver on every par 4 and 5. The condition wasn't fantastic but some sensational holes; particularly the downhill par-3 11th over a ravine and the 14th and 15th holes which wrap around a lake. With a bit more marketing & promotion, this course would get the sort of credit it deserves.

The only word I can use to describe this course is underrated. Macquarie Links is really suffering from small membership and little social play resulting in little atmosphere within the club. However, this does not ring true with the rest of the golf course and practice facilities. For a club that may be struggling, they don't show it. The fairways and overall conditioning of the course and facilities is world class. The bunkers may be a little neglected but other than that they still look as intimidating and imposing off the tee as they've always been. The firmness of both the fairways and greens and the grainy couch rough provided a real test of ones ability. Overall I really couldn't fault the course for its lower $65 rate with cart and range balls included. I hope in a few years, with the promotions regarding memberships takes hold, because it has a lovely natural feel and simply, brilliant playing conditions, making it to me, one of the top 10 venues in Sydney to play if you get the chance.

Very enjoyable and playable course. The course is in great condition right now and playing very tough. Would recommend this place to golfers of a reasonable level. The greens have a lot of borrow, we found putting quite difficult here. Got around in just over 4 hours, teed off at 930 on a Thursday and pretty much had the place to ourselves! We'll certainly be going back.

I've played this course half a dozen times with the most recent this past weekend. It is one of my favourite Sydney courses and great value with the $99 vouchers (for 2 with a cart) that pop up every now and again. I always thoroughly enjoy the challenge and beauty of this course. Even though it is fairly forgiving off the tee because the rough isn't very penal you can't fluke a good score here and need to play very well to score well. There are very few holes where water, bunkers and/or bush aren't in play off the tee and around the green so it's very easy to run up a double bogey or worse on a hole if your approaches are slightly offline. I think the 9th and 18th holes should be swapped around though. The 9th is always a challenge with water in front of and to the left of the green and a bunker to the right and would make a great 18th. They are both challenging holes though and both have water in play on their approaches. This is definitely a course you need to plot your way around with risk/reward decisions required on most of the holes. I've only ever played this course using an electric cart. It would be a very long walk with a pull buggy as there are some quite big distances between greens and the next tee. Pro shop and clubhouse staff are always friendly and it has great practice facilities. Only downside I find is that there is no atmosphere in the clubhouse which almost always seems to be set up for a wedding or function.

Macquarie links is a great course to challenge the single figures player without sacrificing playability for the high handicapper. A course with an excellent array of holes, each with a new challenge and fun and interesting design. The fairways have plenty of swales and bumps to make them interesting as well as the greens, however they are not crazy swales like the greens at the lakes which make for a difficult day out. The things i like most about this course are the width of the fairways (quite wide), the course conditioning (excellent, apart from some of the bunkering which needs some more sand, you can see the clay base at the tops of them), the rough which is not overly penal i.e. unless you really hook or slice your ball to the extreme you will probably find your ball. The strongest point of the course is the variety of the layout which makes great use of the natural landscape and enhances it with artificial hillocks etc, plus the signature par 3's, 11th, 15th and par 4's 14th and 18th. Great course, highly recommended. The course reminds me of playing on good courses throughout Asia, China, Japan etc.
