I'm a member at Cumberland and very fond of the course. Highlights are the par 3's, especially the long 3rd hole that needs a well struck long iron (or driver for the older guys) to reach the green across a valley. The 5th is also worth a mention and I've seen many a ball find the lake to the right of the green and have played many shots from the left up to the elevated green from that side. Par 4 highlights include the short 1st hole which has an elevated green protected by bunkers and the short 17th which is drivable if you are Rory McIilroy, but safer to lay up and pitch onto a complex green if you are a mere mortal. The long (380 odd metres) 6th and the 14th hoes are also a challenge and need a good drive and mid-iron to reach the generous greens. Par 5 highlight is a pick between the 2nd and the 12th which are both reachable for long hitting A-graders, but genuine three shot par 5's for most of us. The kikuyu fairways are generally wide and well maintained., the rough is not that rough and there are a few hidden patches of water for social golfers or visitors so it's worth reading the signs on the tees about taking a provisional if unsure. If you can't see water, it's likely to be where you can't see. Friendly pro-shop and clubhouse staff

Played the monthly medal today. Fair enough, the course is soggy due to heavy rains over previous weeks. But the aprons of a number of greens were damaged and unplayable by numberous wheel tracks from golf carts, presumably by social players given their uncontrolled use on the previous day. Disappointing that Cumberland members were not given more consideration than this by course mangement.

Played here for the first time on Friday. WHAT AN AMAZING COURSE! The course was in fantastic condition, well maintained greens and fairways in perfect condition. There is a great variety of holes here and playable by golfers of all levels. Even though the Par5's are not long they still require thought. The staff were all friendly. Good to see the groundstaff out on course making sure the bunkers were well sanded. They even cheered when I got my birdie. Thanks guys! I will be back again soon & may even join.

Cumberland is a good, honest golf course. Especially when the tees are back near the blue markers. The fairways are wide, with a nice cushion of kikuyu grass in most cases and a couple of bare patches of less than a metre or so across on one or two fairways. For the unfamiliar there are a few holes where the drive is over the crest of a hill, and you need to be careful not to hit up on the group in front. One of the holes has an elevated mirror to help spot the human targets, but this is a feature of a few holes and at least two others need a similar mirror. Hidden water is another feature on a few holes, and the local rule of playing a provisional from the tee if in any doubt it may have landed there means that if you have ended up wet you will be playing your third from a long way back from where the ball was lost. Highlight holes are the longish par 3 3rd with a drive across a valley into a long green angled away from the tee, a handful on mid-length par 4s with wide fairways, large greens and well placed bunkers and a couple of nearly driveable par 4's (1st and 17th) which are well protected by bunkers in front of the greens. The par 5's are not overly long and reachable in 2 with a long drive and a long fairway metal.

I played here this afternoon and the course is in pretty good nick however I don't know that I would rate it as one of the best courses in Sydney as someone else has. It is an above average sorta semi private suburban parkland style public access course. It's better than Fox Hills and on par or maybe slightly better than North Ryde? The fairways and tees were in excellent condition and the greens are large and present a challenge, however they were a little disappointing in that there were a lot of pitch marks and it just feels like they could be really pristine, top quality greens and elevate the course/club to a higher standard with more attention from the greenstaff. That is perhaps being critical and really the greens were as good as any other public course you will play on pretty much. Having said that the layout is good with plenty of long holes to get the driver out and with the $18 after 4pm all you can play deal, I'll be playing here a lot more over the coming Summer. Teeing off at 4pm this afternoon a mate and I played 18 holes, finishing right on 7pm with hardly another person on the course in the beautiful late afternoon sun. Brilliant.
