It is a typical hilly mountain course where you should rent a cart as we did. The course has nice enough scenery but hard clay grounds.

What was really disappointing was the condition of the course.

Tee box - the grass was like tall rough.

Fairway - there were lots of patches where I was scared to injure myself by hitting down on the ground.

Green - ridiculously slow and rough.

Quite simply the worst maintained course I have seen in a number of years.

Founded in 1926, Highlands Golf Club at Mittagong boasts a gentle undulating layout with pines, gums and a variety of deciduous trees lining the fairways. Most greens have bunkers in play and the seven water hazards dotted around the course will punish inaccuracy. Highlights on the front include the left bending 353m par 4 6th with fairway bunkers at the dogleg and an uphill approach to an elevated green and the short left dogleg par 4 7th. This hole measures just 220m but is almost never reachable off the tee with tall gums blocking a direct line to the green and a large dam protecting the front of the putting surface. The only play is a short iron off the tee to the corner leaving a wedge in where accuracy is imperative. The back nine features four par 3s including the elevated 12th with water beside the green and views towards town; the 138m 15th with sand right and steep slope left; the downhill monster 204m 17th (index 2) and the neat little 99m 18th with a water carry over the Nattai River and the clubhouse verandah watching on. The only criticism of this course is the disparity of hole length between the scorecard and tee signage on numerous holes. Particularly on the par 3s, this can be quite annoying if you’re unsure of the meterage not being local or not having a rangefinder. Overall however, the natural surrounds, well maintained surfaces combined with an interesting layout make a round here a great addition to a weekend golfing trip to the Southern Highlands. The par 70 course sits beside the Old Hume Highway at the northern end of Mittagong and a round of golf will cost you $39.

3 of us played here on 9th August.10, 13 and 17 handicaps. First time in 20 years and in it was a very pleasant surprise. Course in good shape but unfortunately the greens had recently had some maintenance but we were told this when we booked so no surprises. Some great holes, especially the 7th, a short par 4 which is one of the best of it's kind in the area and the short par 3 12th which had me reaching for my iPhone camera. Congratulations to the staff and committee. This is a vastly improved golf course and the three of us who played will be back. Have played several courses recently that had green fees twice the price of The Highlands but this offered great value.

Tight little course with some challenging holes. There are a few little par four's that placement off the tee is critical. Local knowledge (which I didn't have) comes in pretty useful on the seventh hole as the landing area, although generous is VERY well protected. On the day I played the greens were absolutely lightning. The lightest of taps on a downhill putt saw my ball about 10m downhill of the cup. For me the greens were a treat, certainly rewarded accurate placement. I'd go back in a heartbeat.

Very good public course, greens are in A1 condition & the discounted price makes it great value for money. We will return.

Played early in morning June, front nine hard to play for sun rising, had to look into sun (made me keep my head down though)would have been a nightmare if i had been by myself. The green were in very good condition as were the fairways. Only problem we had was finding out way around the course, for first time players of the course(signage was very bad or non existant at times. But overall enjoyed our game.
