The nine-hole golf course at the Tathra Beach Country Club rates among one of the prettiest in Australia as it hugs the banks of the beautiful Bega River. The bird life is prolific in the Andy Poole Drive Course and you are bound to have an audience of kangaroos. The course has nine grass greens and seventeen tees which adds much interest to your game.

Measuring 5632 metres, this unique course has featured in golf magazines where it has been identified as one of the best 9 hole courses in Australia. The greens are superb, as anyone who has played the course can attest. The sandy soil is a big asset; it combined with the greenkeepers’expertise ensures the course is in tip top condition.

You can hire clubs from the clubhouse and buy balls and tees there. It’s a good idea to check with the club before you book a game because of competition days. On Tuesday and Thursday mornings the course is closed to the public until 1pm and on Saturday until 3pm. And the 19th hole is well worth a play – the club is renowned for its friendliness and its warm welcome to visitors.

Measures 3673m Par 46 (12 holes) with four par 3s ranging from 143-168m, six par 4s ranging from 328-385m and two par 5s ranging from 448-501m. There are 18 tees and 12 greens. The 2nd green/3rd tee overlooks the mouth of the Bega River which is quite picturesque. Fairways are reasonably covered although some bare patches, teebeds are flat in places and greens are slowish but smooth. The 2nd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 8th, 14th and 18th are bunkerless greens. The first two holes are similar with OOB on the right. Highlights here are the 370m 6th with its undulating fairway which slightly doglegs to the left to a large bunkerless green with subtle slopes. The 330m 8th which has a 90-degree dogleg left from 250m off the tee to a bunkerless green. The 153m 9th with its slightly elevated tee to a green with a bunker 10m short. And the 348m 10th which slightly doglegs left along its undulating fairway to a green guarded by 2 bunkers on the left. Played here 24/9/2010 and paid $20 green fees for 12 holes. To play the 18 holes it measures 5881m Par 71 which is the holes 1-10 then the 11th/2nd, 12th/3rd, 13th/4th, 143m bunkerless 14th with a tree short left and the Bega River over the back, 15th/5th, 16th/6th, 17th/8th and the 159m bunkerless 18th. Clubhouse is very friendly, but its course is not so challenging for the serious golfers. Ok for the holiday golf fix

The course is 18 holes with 12 greens and 18 tees. Holes 2, 3 & 4 double as 11, 12 and 13. Holes 5, 6 and 7 double as 15, 16 and 17. The alternate tees being placed on opposite sides of the fairways, giving a variety of first shots on those holes. The course is fairly flat as it is on a river plain. Play in the morning if you want to miss the kangaroos, which pretty much cover the course late afternoon and evening. Course is in good condition with well maintained greens and fairways. Overall a nice course, but one you probably wouldn’t choose before any of the other courses on the lower south coast.

Tathra is a great 9 hole course. Fairways and greens are terrific and the locals are very welcoming to visitors. Alternate tees on most holes really changes the way this course plays between nines. If you are on the South Coast golfing, its worth having a game at Tathra. 3 1/2 stars.
