Measures 2694m Par 34 with three par 3s ranging from 115-187m, five par 4s ranging from 325-397m and the 454m slight bend right Par 5-3rd. There are alternate tee mounds to play 18 holes which are no greater than 30 metres from the front nine tee mound and there is no change of par on either front or back nine tee mounds. Course has kikuyu grass fairways and tee mounds which are a little dry in places. There are 9 holes where the 9th/18th hole has a separate green to hit to. There are 10 small bentgrass greens mostly 10m long by 5-8m wide and all are front-sloping with a raised rear no higher than 1m above the ground. With a back pin don't go long, as chipping from the rear of these greens is difficult to stop given the size and slope of the greens. 1st-397m / 10th-366m straight hole 2nd-160m / 11th-186m with a tree on the left between the tee and green 3rd-454m / 12th-470m is a slight bend right par 5 which is the longest hole on the course with 4 trees on the dogleg corner on the right. The 12th plays straight with the running rail posts of the racecourse OOB along the entire leftside. 4th-187m / 13th-162m a straight hit with a mid-iron 5th-348m / 14th-371m straight hole beside the 1st/10th tee mounds. 6th-370m / 15th-350m a tee shot in front of the racecourse grandstand with a slight bend to the left to the green. 7th-115m / 16th-152m walk around the 1st & 5th tee mounds to tee off on the shortest hole on the course. 8th-338m / 17th-300m probably the best hole on the course which doglegs 45 degrees to the right from 180m off the tee to the largest green on the course at 20m long and 15m wide with thicker kikuyu grass rough hollows right of the green. 9th-325m / 18th-352m straight hole with the 9th green on the right and the 18th green on the left of the small tree separating the two greens. It is strange to play this 9-hole course as you are playing entirely within the inside edges of the posts of the running rail of the racecourse. The entire course, including all 10 flags and all trees, can be seen from the 1st tee. The inside of the racecourse has been cleared with no more than 20 sizable trees on the course. There are no bunkers on the course. As mentioned the course is within the racecourse on the eastern side of town surrounded by a state forest. The priority is to the racecourse as the course cannot have too many tall trees as the people sitting in the grandstand would not be able to see an entire race! I can only assume that golf is suspended on race days Course access is from Racecourse Road where you turn-off the main highway which happens to be shared by 3 highways the Oxley, Castlereagh and Newell Highways on the way out to town to Coonabarabran (1 hour north-east along the Oxley/Newell Highways) and Mendooran (30 minutes east along the Castlereagh Highway). Gilgandra is a small town of around 2800 people approximately 290m above sea level. Dubbo is the closest full length grass green course and is 45 minutes south along the Newell Highway. Played here 10th April 2012 with $10 green fees. I was surprised to see grass greens out here as every course north of Gilgandra has basic golf facilities (i.e. black soil scrapes). Warren also has grass greens which is 85km (or 1 hour west) of Gilgandra.
