Canowindra measures 2898m Par 35 with two par 3s ranging from 141-175m, six par 4s ranging from 296-389m and the 523m Par 5 3rd. There are alternate tees to play 18 holes here but most of them are on the same tee mound without any change to the par of the hole. The fairways and the teebeds are kikuyu grass with a short and sparse covering of tree-lined fairways make it an easy and gentle flat layout to walk. The 9 small-to-medium sized bent grass greens are fairly slow. There is 1 bunker on the course at the 4th green and a drainage channel along the 5th hole and a small pond on the 1st fairway posing the only hazards in general play. 1st-371m slight bend right with the flag visible from the tee. There is a small water pond 240m off the tee on the rightside of the fairway to avoid to a medium-sized green. 2nd-296m straight hole with a small green visible from the tee. 3rd-523m slight bend left Par 5 with the OOB racetrack on the left to another small green. 4th-141m with a teeshot over a row of trees to the medium-sized green guarded by a bunker short left. Players who cannot hit the ball higher than 15 metres will struggle on this hole. 5th-389m slight bend left with the drainage channel along the left rough to a small green. Probably the most challenging Par 4 on the course. 6th-175m slightly uphill teeshot to a front-sloping small green. Another challenging par 3 hole. 7th-306m with a narrow driving area with trees near the tee with a blind teeshot to a fairway which opens up on the left. Probably the most demanding teeshot where accuracy is required. 8th-357m another blind teeshot over a fairway crest with the flag not visible from the tee to a medium-sized green. 9th-340m slight bend right with the club visible from the tee. Overall, the par 3s are the most challenging with holes 7 & 8 having much taller trees lining the fairways compared to the rest of the course which is fairly open with short trees. Just avoid late Friday afternoons as there is a 6-hole competition which play holes 1 & 2 then 6-9. The club allows groups of up to 10 players with no sense of golf attire who do not call up smaller groups through. Canowindra is a historic town of around 2000 people on the Belubula River approximately 310m above sea level. Course access is in the town centre on the corner of Browns Avenue and the main road out to the north. Played here 9th March 2012 with only $10 green fees. Easy flat walking course with no hills to climb and 40 minutes (or 60km) south-west of Orange and 20 minutes (or 30km) north of Cowra. Compared to the other 9-hole grass green course, Blayney is much more challenging and better conditioned than Canowindra.
