Played at Bathurst on the 25th and 26th of October in the Bathurst Open. Loved the course's well maintained fairways and greens. Native trees line the fairways and it felt a bit like being out on a rural property. Water to speak of doesn't come into play, although a number a gullys run through the course, but water only flows after a lot of rain. Most hazard and rough areas present few difficulties to negotiate even for a high handicapper as I am. My only criticism of the course was the slick green. I heard terms such as glass and concrete being used and it wasn't just high handicappers who were complaining. Even members and low handicappers struggled with plenty of stories of single digit markers four putting being discussed in the bar. Pro shop and club staff were very friendly and hospitable along with club members. The food in the restaurant was tops and I have to say that the burger I ordered was up there with the best I have eaten.

Nice course, lovely couch fairways and tee's with smooth undulating greens. Plently of room and lots of trees dividing the fairways. The bunkers were a bit ordinary being the only thing I could pick on. There are a few short par 4's, these need to be played with anything you can hit straightish, as do most of the holes because anything that leaves the fairway is gobbled up by the rough and shot miles into the trees because the ground is so bloody hard, making recovery shots very difficult. The Club house and proshop were great. Have a hit here if you get chance. You might even get lucky and cop a sledge or a cat whistle from thr jail next door. Good idea not to wear anything to lairy!

Bathurst still measures 6065m Par 71 with four par 3s ranging from 125-191m, eleven par 4s ranging from 299-407m and three par 5s ranging from 462-525m. Course has plans to re-seed the entire course to Santa Ana couch fairways, however, currently it has South African couch fairways and teebeds. There are some rye and clover grass in patches currently over the fairways. The medium-to-large sized bent grass greens are fairly smooth with consistent roll. There is a total of 54 bunkers with the 368m slightly uphill straight 1st (index 6) being the only bunkerless hole on the course . FRONT NINE highlights include the stretch of holes 5-7: the 190m slightly uphill 5th (index 2) with 3 bunkers; the signature 386m slight bend left 6th (index 4) with a fairway crest 220m off the tee to see the long green guarded by 3 bunkers; and the 377m straight 7th (index 7) with the same fairway crest to reach off the tee to a heavily guarded green with 4 bunkers. BACK NINE highlights include: the 407m slight dogleg left 10th (index 1) long par 4 with a water hazard on the dogleg corner to a large green guarded by 2 bunkers. Cannot say I saw any gallery at the 11th tee, but the 306m slight bend left 11th (index 17) with a creek along the leftside rough cuts the fairway about 50m short of the green guarded by 3 bunkers, can be interesting with the OOB prison far left of the creek and the finishing 4 holes. Overall, the course has wide fairways and is fairly challenging for all golfers. The par 4s on the front nine are stronger than the back nine, whilst the par 5s increase in length as you warm into your round. The signature 525m slight dogleg left 15th (index 11) plays uphill from 150m out on the fairway with a fairway bunker 50m short right of the green guarded by 2 bunkers is probably the most challenging par 5 to par on the course. There are many short par 4s on the back nine, however, the 342m slight bend right 17th (index 14) with a downhill teeshot is worthy of mention. This hole is by far the most bunkered on the course with 4 fairway bunkers 40-100m out from the large green which is guarded by another 4 bunkers. The 391m slight bend left 18th (index 5) is a good length par 4 to finish under the clubhouse with a large front-sloping green guarded by 2 frontside bunkers. Played here 12th March 2012 with $28 green fees. Course access is from the Mitchell Highway on the western side of the city bounded by Boundary Road to the west, Mitchell Highway to the north and Mid-Western Highway to the south. Bathurst is a major Central Tablelands city of around 35 000 people about 30 minutes east of Orange and 45 minutes west of Lithgow. The city of Bathurst ranges from 635m above sea level near the Macquarie River to 879m above sea level to the south of Mount Panorama. The golf course ranges from approximately 700m above sea level at the 11th teebed to 740m above sea level at the 14th green and 15th tee. Highway traffic noise can interfere when playing 10 and 15 as well as on the 11th tee and 2nd and 14th greens. Apart from this there is not much wrong with this country layout as the course conditioning and challenges make Bathurst amongst the top courses in the Central Tablelands region. Highly recommend a round here.

This is a great country course, undulating terrain, good use of dams and creeks and there is always a galery when hitting off the 11th with the prison next door. Big hitters can cause some excitement among the crowd by cutting the corner over the gaol on the short par 4. Members are a great bunch of blokes too.
