COURSE DETAILS

Newcastle is one of only two courses in NSW given international recognition by the panel of experts rating the World’s Top 100 Courses. It has recently been rated "International Honourable Mention", meaning that it has won sufficient points to be worthy of inclusion in the Top 100 courses in the USA. As only a handful of the World Panel have played in Newcastle, it speaks volumes that those who have played this hidden gem rate it so highly.

A true championship course of 6160 metres (6800 yards), it is based on undulating sand dunes like those of the great historic links of Great Britain and Ireland. However, instead of fairways lined by gorse and heather, Newcastle is carved out of a forest of Eucalypts and angophoras abounding in native flora and fauna, including kookaburras, bearded dragons and kangaroos, making it a delightful as well as a challenging course to play.

Although the course is situated only a few kilometres from the busy industrial city and port of Newcastle, the wide bands of trees separating the fairways give a feeling of peaceful isolation from the cares of the world.

Comfortably the best course in the Hunter. Superb conditioning and fantastic architecture. Such a magnificent setting that looks like it was made to host a golf course.

The course was in a great condition, despite the past rainy days - must have top drainage in place. Greens weren't too fast nor too slow and the fairways were manicured nicely. Very challenging, with most greens well protected by ash-like bunkers that will sink your ball down deeply.  Good pace, not too slow. However, I couldn't reconcile the course's world top 100 position against the quality I saw on the day, so felt a bit overrated in that respect. Not sure if I'd drive up again from Sydney to play here. Otherwise, the members & staff were friendly and approachable and the overall experience was very good.

Pretty dumb having 2 par 3s that 90% of golf ears can't reach. Greens really poor for a top 20 course. Fairway conditions were great and the variation in holes really interesting. Bunkers remind me of my kids sandpit, way to soft as balls plug even when bouncing in. Verdict, layout top 20, condition public

Played Boxing Day, and this course stood up to the hype. Was very Melbourne Sandbelt like, except much greater natural undulation/ elevation changes. The long Par 3's were tough but fair with good wide landing areas. The first 2 holes, and last four or so holes are weaker compared to the others, as they are located in a more parkland area. Its a course I could play everyday and not get bored. Greens are well designed and not too tricked up, same with the bunkering where it is not overdone.

Great course, some beautiful holes throughout. The long par 3's are killer at 200+. With not having played Newcastle before a couple of the blind tee off's proved difficult. Will definitely play again if up that way.

My favourite course in Australia. Really challenges every part of your game. Gets better every time you play, some great driving holes. Greens can be super quick in winter.
