COURSE DETAILS

This course, situated near the Murrumbidgee River, with amazing vistas of the Brindabella Range, is a challenging test of length and skills. With the odd breeze not uncommon, a fantastic round of golf awaits all levels of golfers.

Large water carries, and rolling hills, make this a true test of golf on a championship layout.

I note that the last review was 12 months ago so I thought that I would give an update having played there for the last 2 years. The couse is in excellent condition at the moment, and the improvement over the last 12 months are clearly evident. In that time all fairways have been cored and I believe are being mown a little longer. It is pleasure to be able to hit from a decent lie rather than the very skinny lies that were evident only a year ago. There has been a lot of work on refurbishing some bunkers which have made them more playable. The first and second cut of rough are also now lush in most places allowing you a good swing at the ball. In drought times this was not always the case. The club is relaxed and members friendly. I believe membership has increased significantly over recent times and you need to be on the ball to get your preferred tee time on Weekends and on the Wednesday pro comp. Also being able to pay membership fees fortnightly eases the pain a bit. At about $1000 per year the fees are good value given the course.

This is quite an interesting layout, with quite a few undulations on the front 9. The course was in excellent condition with well grassed fairways and good greens. The greens are quite grainy, so fast down grain or down hill, but slower the other way. It is difficult to judge the pace of a lot of them. The rough is well grassed in most places and quite thick, so the ball will sit down in it a bit. The bunkering is good and there is a bit of water in play on several holes. We played on 27/12/2012 and the course was quite crowded, so it took nearly 5 hours to play. We hooked up with a couple of members who were very nice, it would have been horribly slow as a two. The course can be walked quite comfortably. The course is a par 72 (rating 72) for men and par 73 (rating 74) for women. The course plays extremely long for women, with most par 5s well over 400 metres long and two of them in the 470-480 range. The green fees of $22 were excellent value for money. Well worth a visit if you are in the area.

Opened in the early 1980s Murrumbidgee is now boasts the longest layout in Canberra and measures 6465m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 148-196m, ten par 4s ranging from 329-412m and four par 5s ranging from 464-520m. Course has cool-season ryegrass fairways and teebeds with wide fairways. The medium sized pure bentgrass greens are smooth with consistent roll. There are 3 large storage ponds on the course, however, only two of these come into general play. There are only 3 bunkerless holes (at 5,10,15) with a total of 33 bunkers on the course. Despite the front nine being slightly more bunkered it is somewhat easier than the back nine and begins in an anti-clockwise circular outward direction with homes along one side of the fairway. The back nine is challenging with some long par 3 and par 4 holes, and not to mention its par 5s are both 520m in length. Highlights include: the signature 196m 9th (index 7) with a long teeshot over the storage pond/lake to a green guarded by 2 bunkers; the 520m 11th (index 8) which doglegs 60 degrees left (at the tree centre-right of the fairway) from 150m out of the green which is guarded by 2 shortside bunkers; and the 380m 18th (index 4) which doglegs sharply 75 degrees left around the large red-staked storage pond/lake which is along the entire leftside from the tee to the green which is guarded by 3 bunkers. The par 3s here are the most challenging and varied aspect on the course with good bunkering. Apart from the 329m straight 16th (index 17) the back nine par 4s are long and challenging. Accuracy is not necessarily required on this layout as the wide fairways, generous rough areas and minimal fairway bunkering enables you to take driver out on all of its par 4s and par 5s. Seeing the homes on the front nine can remind you of a resort-styled course. Actually, the front nine is very similar to Gold Creek and the course generally is similar to both of Canberra's northern suburbs layouts of Gungahlin Lakes and Gold Creek. Course access is from Kambah Pool Road in the south-western suburbs of Canberra. Course elevation is approximately 600m above sea level with the highest point on the course being the elevated tee at the 464m dogleg right 6th (index 15). Played here 24/04/2012 with $22 weekday green fees and $29 weekend green fees. I did quite like the detailed hole diagram maps at each tee. I recommend a round here at one of the better challenges and the longest layout in the Canberra metropolitan area.

Not the worst course by any stretch, but condition varies wildly.

Good and interesting layout, and would have been an enjoyable round if the greens weren't made of marble granite!!!!!! Don't know bout anyone else, but I donlt get much pleasure from hitting nine iron into the green and watching bounce 8 feet in the air and over the back. The hardness and speed of these greens was ridiculous!!! Even worse, I arrive at the 6th hole, and the green was soaking wet! Seriously could have been a great value and enjoyable round of golf, but the greens care appears sloppy and without care or plan

Played 3 courses in Canberra over the holidays being from the north side of Canberra when living there, i hadn't made the journey down to Murrumbidgee before. What a mistake that was. This is a very good course, and has been kept in very good condition despite the lack of rain/water over recent years. By far the best value golf course in Canberra too in better condition than most, and still cheaper than most too!!
